Horses and the Handicapped of South Florida, Inc.

In a recent interview, Horses and the Handicapped of South Florida, Inc. Community Outreach Manager Molly Murphy shared what’s new and exciting about H&H:

Explain how H&H has evolved in its 30 years as an organization supporting the special needs community?
Throughout our 30 years, H&H has served hundreds of special needs children and adults through the use of equine-assisted activities and therapies. We started by serving 5 riders in a field. Today, we serve over 100 riders per year at a beautiful facility in Tradewinds Park with our own horses and covered arena! We have certainly come a long way!

Our programs reflect the unique needs of those that we serve. H&H turns therapy into a hobby that teaches students success and self-confidence; something that they may not get a chance to explore in their daily lives. What makes this program so successful is its ability to touch the entire family. Not only are we providing much-needed therapy, we are creating a network among parents and peers that they can use outside of the barn.

What have been some of the highlights of your years with the organization?
I have watched H&H grow over the past 3 years. We are developing new programs such as Equine Facilitated Learning and Psychotherapy to fulfill a need within our community. I have witnessed several students succeed physically, mentally and emotionally because of the therapy that we are able to provide. Our achievements would not have been possible if it were not for our fabulous volunteer team, staff and Board of Directors.

How can folks support your mission?
There are many different ways that people can support our mission. Whether through volunteering, committee work or event support, it is the power of our community that makes H&H so strong. The H&H will gladly provide facility tours throughout the week. What new and exciting events/programs are on tap for H&H during the remainder of 2012?
We are extremely excited to be offering a special needs summer camp as well as a volunteer horsemanship camp. We are also thrilled to ‘re-vamp’ our signature fundraising event, the 5th Annual Horseshoe Hoedown. The event will be held at our facility on Saturday, November 17th and will feature a riding parade, Silent Auction, and live entertainment by the Amber Leigh Band!
